Variability and Velocity of Superluminal Sources

چکیده
We investigate the relation between the Doppler factor determined from variations in total flux at 22 and 37 GHz, and the apparent transverse velocity determined from VLBA observations at 2 cm. The data are consistent with the relativistic beaming theory for compact radio sources, in that the distribution of β app /δ var , for 30 quasars, is roughly consistent with a Monte Carlo simulation. The intrinsic temperature appears to be ∼ 2 × 10 10 K, close to the " equipartition value " calculated by Readhead (1994). We deduce the distribution of Lorentz factors for a group of 48 sources; the values range up to about γ = 40.

Comment on "Observation of image pair creation and annihilation from superluminal scattering sources" [1]
In a recent paper [1] in this journal, the authors demonstrate the capabilities of their high-speed optical imaging equipment by observing the spatial and temporal behavior of a short light pulse, interacting with a scattering screen. However, they make the revolutionary claim that their measurement results can be interpreted as the effects of a superluminal light source, i.e. a source moving a...
متن کاملLimiting superluminal electron and neutrino velocities using the 2010 Crab Nebula flare and the IceCube PeV neutrino events
The observation of two PeV-scale neutrino events reported by Ice Cube allows one to place constraints on Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) in the neutrino sector. After first arguing that at least one of the PeV IceCube events was of extragalactic origin, I derive an upper limit for the difference between putative superluminal neutrino and electron velocities of 6 5:6 10 19 in units where c 1⁄...
متن کاملHydrodynamical Models of Superluminal Sources
We present numerical simulations of the generation, evolution, and radio emission of superluminal components in relativistic jets. We perform the fluid dynamical calculations using a relativistic time-dependent code based on a high-resolution shock-capturing scheme, and then we calculate the radio emission by integrating the transfer equations for synchrotron radiation. These simulations show t...
متن کاملSuperluminal Radio Features in the M87 Jet and the Site of Flaring Tev Gamma-ray Emission
Superluminal motion is a common feature of radio jets in powerful γ-ray emitting active galactic nuclei. Conventionally, the variable emission is assumed to originate near the central supermassive black-hole where the jet is launched on parsec scales or smaller. Here, we report the discovery of superluminal radio features within a distinct flaring X-ray emitting region in the jet of the nearby ...
متن کاملThe Diverse Properties of GPS Sources
We discuss the morphology and kinematics of five gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) sources that have been observed with the VLBA. We find a wide range of observed properties including core-jet structure, superluminal motion, variability, extended structure, and polarization, all of which appear to deviate from commonlyaccepted GPS paradigms (e.g., O’Dea 1998). We suggest that the observed low fre...
